Functional surfaces

The specification, manufacture and characterization of functional surfaces form the corner stones of this research theme. Surface functionality can be defined from a product functionality point of view (e.g. self-cleaning surfaces) or from a process functionality point of view (e.g. friction optimized tool surfaces). The theme integrates competencies across two sections of DTU Mekanik.

Core activities comprise surface engineering in relation to bulk and sheet metal forming, tribological issues in micro/nano cutting processes, chemical and electrochemical processes for establishing functional surfaces as well as the integration of different materials into the surface in order to obtain the desired functionality. Furthermore geometrical and chemical characterization of surfaces is a core competence.
